Elon Musk says he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, a proposed distribution worth about $10.5 billion at the company’s cited closing price. The pledge would cover roughly 72 million children under 18, but Musk has not explained how or when the shares would be transferred. It remains an announcement, not a completed giveaway.
A pledge valued at about $10.5 billion
The estimate uses SpaceX’s closing share price of $146.03 on Friday and the figure of 72 million U.S. children under 18 as of July 1, 2025. At that price, one share for each child would represent a substantial transfer of company stock, though the quoted value could change with the share price.
Musk said on X, “This will be the first of many,” but gave no further information about the plan. The statement does not set out who would qualify, when a transfer would take place, or what process families would use to receive or hold the shares.
Musk’s stake and the scale of the transfer
Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, according to an August SEC filing. Including unvested awards and stock options brings the cited total to 6.4 billion, representing a 48.4% beneficial stake in the company.
A distribution of 72 million shares would equal about 1.5% of Musk’s 4.8 billion directly held shares. That calculation indicates the scale relative to his reported share count; it does not establish how the pledge would affect his beneficial ownership or what corporate steps would be needed to carry it out.
How the shares might reach children
The announcement does not specify the mechanics of delivery. It leaves open practical questions such as how eligibility would be confirmed for children under 18, who would manage shares on their behalf, and how the transfer would be handled across a population of roughly 72 million.
Those details matter because a promised share is not the same as a transfer that has been completed. Until a process and timetable are disclosed, families cannot know when they might receive an asset, how it would be held, or whether any conditions would apply. Musk’s post provides no answer to those questions.
Anthropic’s separate public-benefit proposal
Musk’s comments followed Anthropic’s announcement that it plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval. The company’s board could add another 2% for every 50% increase in Anthropic’s value above a baseline that has not yet been disclosed.
Anthropic said the fund could support large donations, including grants to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to particular groups. It also described possible work on the effects of AI-related job disruption and displacement. Musk responded to Anthropic’s post on X by recommending that shares go directly to the public and saying that was what he intended to do.
What remains to be established
The two proposals are different: Anthropic outlined a fund whose structure depends on shareholder approval, while Musk described giving individual SpaceX shares to children. Neither the size of a possible Anthropic fund’s eventual contribution nor the operating details of Musk’s pledge are fully set out in the announcements.
For Musk’s plan, the next meaningful developments would be concrete terms covering eligibility, timing and distribution. Until those are announced and the shares are transferred, the $10.5 billion figure is an estimate based on a stated share price—not money or stock already received by children.
Takeaway: Musk has pledged one SpaceX share to every U.S. child next year, but the plan’s value is an estimate and its delivery details remain unannounced.
